the ferrymen history

The first incarnation of The Ferrymen formed up in 1959 under the name of The Pegasus Four . The group was established by Keith Crellin, (Bass and Vocals), with Pete Dunn on lead guitar and vocals , Ray (Casey) Walker Lead/Rhythm guitar and vocals and Len Holden on  drums.

Ray Walker sadly died of a heart attack at the age of 37, cutting short a promising  career as a painter and sculptor in Liverpool and London. He married Joanie in the late sixties and we understand he re married later on but have no information at this point. If you can help with more history please contact us.

The Pegasus Four later changed their name to Og! The fans mistook the exclamation mark for the letter i, so the band became known as Ogi by default! No one owned up to being Ogi but it was generally atributed to Casey. The bands slogan was 'Pure beat extract', ( Pete Dunn idea) coined from the OXO advert of the time: 'PURE BEEF EXTRACT!'

The Flintstones called it a day in 1962 when Keith moved to Leeds. Upon his return to  Liverpool, Keith was once again putting together a group under the name The Pilgrims in 1964. The Pilgrims consisted of  Dave Richardson Lead and vocals (brother-in-law to actor Tom Georgeson who was later to find fame in films such as  in A fish called Wanda), Keith Crellin bass and vocals, John Rekkas rhythm and vocals (cousin of the illustrious composer John Barry), and Holden on drums once again. George Georgeson also gave a lot of input on vocals and harp although never joining the band full time.

Dave Richardson emigrated to Melbourne Australia leaving the group in need  of a guitarist / vocalits. Now going under the name of The Ferrymen, the search for the new member ended in Hessy's music shop in Stanley Street, Liverpool, where Keith met his future brother-in-law and new lead guitarist Alan Millington.

The final lline-up of The Ferrymen was now complete.
